Cougars Take 3 out of 4 at Stafford
STAFFORD - The varsity boys were led by junior Errol Hampton's first overall win of the season. Hampton was the only runner to break 18 minutes over the 5k course. Kempner was able to score only 22 points, the lowest point total of the seaon, by placing 1, 2, 4, 5 and 10. Junior Shalin Dalal was 2nd, senior Chris Valdez 4th, junior Shanup Dalal 5th and junior Jonathan Silva placed 10th.
In the varsity girls' race Kempner scored a season best 20 points with a 1-2-3 sweep. The top three spots were taken by freshman Briana Gifford, junior Zelda Abadom and senior Stephanie Cleghorn. Sophmore Katherine Toy placed 5th, senior Elizabeth Westlake was 9th and senior Nikki Gifford was 11th. The girls won over Stafford and Columbia.
The junior varsity girls also won the team title led by freshman Jena Dietrick's first win of the season as she led a Kempner 1-2-3-4 group. She was followed by freshman Stevi Higgins, sophmore Angela Cortez, and sophmore Sahar Halim. Freshman Lillian Dominguez closed out the Kempner top 5 placing 10th.
The junior varsity boys placed 2nd to a solid Travis team. Travis swept the top 3 spots but Kempner had 5 runners finish before Travis' 4th. Travis outscored the JV 25 to 30. The 4-5-6-7-8 finish order came respectively from sophmore Emilio Dosal, sophmore Evan Bogdan, sophmore Patrick Willis, junior Jimmy Luong and junior Kyle Muscarello.
Next up for the Cougars is the district championships this Friday at Missouri City Park. The varsity girls are looking for their 5th straight championship and the varsity boys are trying to overcome to second place finishes in a row to win their 10th district title overall. The varsity boys race will start at 4pm and the varsity girls will follow at 4:30. Come out and help the Cougs bring home the district championship to Kempner!
