Sheppard hits 4:25, Westlake sets new school record in mile

PEARLAND - The Oiler Relays proved to be a great meet for distance runners, especially in the 1600 meters. Four athletes were able to set new PRs led by senior Eric Sheppard. Sheppard ran4:25.55, a 7 second improvement for this season, finishing 4th in a fast mile won by the Woodlands' senior Luke Hansen in 4:13.10. Chris Pine finished 2nd in his heat with a five second PR of 4:41.21. Sophomore Elizabeth Westlake set a new PR and Kempner school record of 5:33.17 and junior Amy MacHemehl ran a PR of 5:42.08. Senior Chris Pine set a new PR in the 3200m of only a few hundreths of a second with a 10:10.36. Westlake had some stomach problems in the 3200m and was only able to manage a 12:14, seven seconds slower than her best. MacHemehl was able to set a track PR of 12:41 but was not as good as her cross country best of 12:32. In the 800 meters senior Veronica Rodriguez set a personal best of 2:28 after vaulting 9-0 in the pole vault and clearing 4-10 in the high jump.

The Cougars will be competing at the Katy Invitational this Thursday.
